I’m hopelessly addicted to blog rankings. Even while stranded in the African desert of internet connectivity I still compulsively check how many people are viewing my blog and what my technorati rank is. Can’t help it. Gotta know.

technorati tells all

Currently at technorati my blog is ranked at 95,241. I call that a “5-digit blog.” I’ve always hoped to rank in the top 100,000 on technorati so currently all my hopes are realized and I can retire a happy man. According to technorati there are currently more than 55 million blogs out there. So to rank in the top 100,000 means that you are crème de la crème.

In terms of percentages, my blog ranks in the top 17 percent of the top 1 percent of all blogs in the known universe!

The math: (0.0017316545454545454545454545454545=95,241/55 million).

When I woke up this morning I didn’t realize that I’m as wildly popular as that but statistics don’t lie. But, hmmm, wait a minute here. What are the ranks of some of the other blogs I watch? Argh!

  • Better Bibles Blog: Rank: 19,745 (593 links from 162 blogs)
  • Challies Dot Com: Rank: 1,212 (3,470 links from 1,084 blogs)
  • Lingamish (Old Blog): Rank: 62,855 (123 links from 53 blogs)

I discover that Better Bibles is in the 5-digit range as well but much closer to moving into the top 10,000 (19,745) and Challies is in the 4-digit range (1,212). Even my old blog which I haven’t updated in more than four months is ranked higher than my current and beloved blog!

What to do about your current woeful ranking

Link to my blog. It’s as simple as that. The currency of the blogonomy is links. When you link to my blog, I link to yours and our blogs both get a boost. In blog talk that’s called “link-love” and the more you give the more you get. If you link to my blog I invariably link back to yours in an open-hearted display of reciprocity. Unless you’re spam or weirdness…

Comments are temporary, posts are forever

Rather than put a comment on my blog, it’s better to mention it briefly on your own blog. WordPress automatically adds a reference to your post on my blog. Slick, eh? So go out there and write a post with a link to this blog in it. Go ahead. I dare you! I beg you. A few more links and I think I could get into the top 90,000. I know I’m pathetic but have pity.

If you want to see the rank of your blog at technorati click here. Then enter your blog’s address in the form.

Start 2007 on a happy note, send some link-love my way.

I’m confused. I’m also wondering how to get my blog into the 6-digit blogs! Currently at Technorati I see “Rank: 2,429,896 (No blogs link here yet)”, which apparently means that 2,429,895 blogs have more than zero links to them - and so that to have even one link puts you in the top 5% of blogs! But then two lines below I read “263 links to this URL sorted by…”, followed by a list of links - actually considerably more links than Lingamish’s 95. Thus, extrapolating from Better Bibles Blog and Lingamish’s own blog, my rating should be something around 40,000.

The key is apparently on the line in between: “Updated: 498 days ago”, which is about when I first set up my blog. So how do I get Technorati to update my ranking to match the set of links which they have already collected? It doesn’t help to ping Technorati, which I have just done, and had done before.

Do I perhaps have to become a Technorati member to get a rating? If so, I suppose that implies that there are 2,429,895 blogs with more than zero links belonging to Technorati members. This would also imply that Lingamish’s achievement in reaching five digits is not as great as he thinks, because there may be millions of non-members like myself who could leapfrog him immediately if only we bothered to sign up.

    Peter,

Sorry I can’t help you. But should you ever work it out I’ll be waiting to welcome you into the “inner circle.”

By the way, WordPress forces all comments with two or more hyperlinks to be moderated. So it’s a good idea to just put in one link at the most.

I didn’t become a member of technorati but I did claim my blog. The “last updated” statistic has frustrated me before as well.

    Good luck.

  3. Eddie says:

Technorati doesn’t seem to pick up all of the links to a blog. There are a number of blogs who link to me that aren’ t showing up on Technorati or on the Wordpress incoming links page.

Still, I don’t ranks as high as you, so I’m just jealous.

  4. BruceA says:

One way to get more links is to join a blogroll. Your blog will automatically receive a link from all the other member blogs.

  5. Peter Kirk says:

Well, when I tried to claim my blog I was first asked to join Technorati. So I have now both joined and claimed my blog. And my rank has increased to 2,433,682. I have now e-mailed Technorati technical support about this.

  6. lingamish says:

Peter, welcome to the club. My post was mostly tongue-in-cheek and full of just enough logical fallacy to alert your suspicions. technorati ranking is a bit of a mirage when you start looking at the numbers, but as I said I just can’t help looking! The true value of a blog is the interaction it permits with fine fellows like you and Eddie. For that reason I truly do feel part of the inner circle.

  7. Peter Kirk says:

I’m pleased to report that, following intervention by the Technorati technical team, I have indeed joined your five digit club, and indeed leapt past you to rank 83,439. I’m not sure if it was worth the effort, but I don’t like being beaten!

  8. lingamish says:

Yikes! It’s an hono(u)r to know such a high ranking blogger!

  9. For what it’s worth, I added you to my blogroll on Codex. I checked out my blog and it ranks 18,761 which I guess is pretty darn good, eh?!

  10. lingamish says:

Grazie mille, Tyler. Just goes to show that pleading can work!
And way to go on the ranking. I guess I’ll have to try to be more controversial if I want to join the pantheon of the greats.

hi peter kirk… how long did it take for technorati to reply in your query ? i did the same thing but there’s no reply yet…

  13. Well I just gave you some link love… technorati should confirm it shortly :)
Nice blog btw. Mine is perhaps a little more polemic - but not overly so I hope, but I have some stuff about linguistics (mostly fun stuff as it is a hobby interest, not my job).

It will reduce the volume of spam by 30-50% .In return Id like to ask you to put a link to my site on the index page of your site. The link will be small and your visitors will hardly notice it , its just done for higher rankings in search engines. Contact me icq 454528835 or write me tedirectory(at)yahoo.com , i will give you my site url and you will give me yours if you are interested. thank you
