Word-giver, message-sender, life-breathing God.
Your Bible is beautiful even if a bit odd.
A treasure most treacherous, a sword and a song.
Transforming and warning and comforting us all.
To dip in its pages is to drown in your stream.
To plunge in an ocean of praise.
History, tragedy, romance and wrath.
Divine dissection of the human heart.
Your soul-salve sits silent.
It sits on a shelf.
We scurry and worry, we dabble and babble,
When wealth-wielding words wait forgotten.
The Bible! We talk it. Interpret it.
Sell it and worship it. But read it, no!
Silent it sits in a screaming world.
Shouted down and drowned out.
At wit’s end and rope’s end,
We reach for your Word.
Not for study but for help
And hope to feel the hand of God.
We reach for your Word
And the Word reaches us.
Jesus, Celestial Son, catches us
In cradle and cross and cloud.
