Repeat the following words over and over:
I am a friend of God. I am a friend of God. I am a friend of God. He calls me friend.
What is the effect of Israel Houghton’s Friend of God on you?
- Transports me into realms of heavenly worship bliss.
- Drives me absolutely bonkers after about 10 seconds.

Are we supposed to see ourselves as a friend of God, or as sons and daughters of God? The American culture has attempted to make everyone friends instead of respecting the relationships that we have in families. Wouldn’t the lurics be better as “I am a son of God, He calls me son”?
Good point. You know you’re in trouble when someone calls you “friend.” Even so, I think it’s valid to focus on God calling us friends. Better than him calling us enemies!
Neither 1 nor 2. I worry when singing it that “I am a friend of God” is really self-worship rather than worshiping God, but then think “He calls me friend” is God worship.
