I promise to reply to this soon.
John Hobbins has just posted an excellent post on his “favorite translation.” My favorite response yet is from the late blog of Dr. Jim West. Thanks to Google cache it is available here. Peter Kirk points to the NIV/TNIV. I’ll have good things to say about that conglomerate when I post as well.
Have a great day.
Wasn’t Jim’s answer the best, though?! I think I’ll print it and frame it. “Oh thou Marcionite!”
My comment doesn’t show up on the cache but I had said, “Jim, you’re beautiful. Can I just borrow your answers?” Unfortunately, pride blossomed in Jim’s heart in that moment and his blog was instantly devoured by worms. Gross, I know. But hubris is far uglier still…
Jim prayed (in the cached post) “do, O Lord, thereby, purify the world of such unpleasantries”. Shortly thereafter, the Lord, or one of his servants, purified the world of Jim’s blog. Perhaps not one of the unpleasantries Jim had in mind, but this is either divine judgment or delightful irony, I’m not sure which!
Still napping? Is this what you meant when you said you’re severely meme challenged at the moment? Won’t you ever tell us who your teachers are now that you’re forty? Happy Birthday!
I’m not 40 until Thursday. And I’ve patiently explained that the answer to both questions is the same: I am my own favorite teacher and preacher. I was the bright pain-in-the-neck student sitting in the back of every class you ever sat in.
