I haven’t really done Cyber-Psalm commentaries recently but this one deserves comment. First, I want to thank those who gave suggestions on blessings to add to the song and at the same time apologize for not using any particular idea. I should have put up a demo of the song so you could hear how it all fits together.
I did some rewriting on the original mostly to make the language more “down to earth.” For example, the second line of the chorus first said, “Peace in your strife." This is a somewhat hackneyed expression and I opted for the very specific “Peace in your home.” That’s something we all wish to be blessed with. Later the sappy line “Love in your life” was changed to “Freedom from debt.” This is decidedly unromantic/spiritual but as I prayed about what I would really wish others to be blessed with, freedom from debt is right up there at the top. Personal indebtedness is a great source of anxiety and also a big hindrance to the idea in the final line “A mission to help the lost.” I believe very few people are able to minister to the hurting world through generosity or time when they are overwhelmed by credit card debts, etc.
The final line is also partially inspired by the conversation we had this week (See: While I was watching reality TV ) about reaching out to the world when there are so many needs crying out. One of the things that people like my parents and siblings have taught me is that each of us can find a mission that gives purpose to our lives beyond simple materialism and hedonism. I greatly admire people who do that without the luxury that I have as a full-time missionary.
Finally, I have found “grace in my conflicts” regarding the recent discussion about Ray Boltz. I’m sensing unity despite lack of uniformity on that issue and for that I say to my blogger friends, “You are a blessing!”
