Aye, I was a notorious software pirate in high school. No software was safe on the school’s computers. But after bein’ banned for life from the computer lab and also undergoin’ a spiritual con’ersion t’ Christianity Me left behind my eye patch and peg leg and became annoyin’ly legalistic on the subject o’ software copyright.
As happens with the legalists, my resolutions have slipped o’er the years as I’’e disco’ard that reality is often more nuanced than our simple categories. Now thar is open source software. Thar be legal loopholes such as “time shiftin’.” Pretty soon the concept o’ piracy becomes fuzzy.
Gar.
Arrr, well, this post isn’t verily about piracy but rather about my quest for buried treasure on the Internet for students o’ Biblical Greek and Hebrew.
I have already mentioned the excellent Academy o’ Ancient Languages. They have the mighty Hebrew Bible in mp3 format and the recordin’s be quite excellent. Their Greek collection is rather limited but I did find a mighty collection o’ the New Testament books in mp3 format at http://greeklatinaudio.com/ : http://www.heldin’.net/greeklatinaudio/greek/. It’s not a perfect solution since the recordin’s be o’ une’en quality and thar’s a preface before e’ery chapter pluggin’ Greeklatinaudio.com. But the pronunciation seems quite good t’ me.
Now, I’’e handed you the keys t’ a treasure chest o’ mp3 files, but how be you goin’ t’ download them all? I downloaded the Psalms one at a time and about ga’e myself tendonitis from all the clickin’. So Me went in search o’ a tool t’ speed thin’s up. The program I found is called Downthemall. It allows you t’ download all the media on a page and e’en limit it t’ just images or audio. So, you’ll still need t’ do some diggin’ but Downthemall will help streamline your online pillagin’ o’ Biblical resources.
