Breadcrumbs in the Internet forest

I frequently find myself with a browser open with 10 or 20 tabs of things that I wanted to look at but not now. It’s time to shut off the computer and interact with real people for a while. Now what do I do?

  1. Share them on Google Reader. This is nice and easy and allows for some pretty serious sorting. But it is text only and it’s kinda slow.
  2. Bookmark all tabs: This is fine but I find that I seldom go back to these and when I do they’re all online so I have to reload everything.
  3. Twitter them: I use twitter bar and theoretically I could Tweet each of the links with a description. Not so nice because I end up with a bunch of messy links that can’t really be organized.
  4. Tumblr everything: This has some serious advantages. Using the Share on Tumblr bookmark you can choose what you want to hold on to whether it be a quote, a picture or even a video and it will add them to your tumblog complete with links back to the original page. Disadvantage is you can share the stuff but it isn’t very easy to organize and no one else can comment on your links (unless you install something).
  5. WordPress: You might have guessed that I like this one. In a way it is similar to Tumblr in that the “Press this” brings up a nice popup box with all the media options. It goes beyond Tumblr however in having categorization and tagging. And it’s a lot faster, an important point in its favor for someone like myself who connects through a glacial Internet service.
  6. SimplyBox: This is a way out there service that allows you to grab essentially screen shots and then organize them free-form on a desktop. You can drop saved items into different boxes and comment on them. But it’s essentially a collection of graphics. You can’t use text unless you want to type it out or visit the source.

I’ve been using Tumblr and Twitter in this way but I’m thinking about switching over to WordPress. I could create a blog just for links and use the Press This function to grab just the info I want.

How about you? Do you have any good tips for organizing online research?

Search for the firefox add-on for the Mozialla Archive format (MAFF). It has a feature to completely save all tabs to a file.
