Our house in the village

In 2001 we had built a mud hut and used that as our home, but it was a bit too small and too primitive for us. So we decided we’d better build something bigger. This is what the area looked like before our hut was built in 2001.

This is what it looked like when it was completed:

In 2004 and 2005 we built a two-bedroom house in the village of Dinthi which is in Tete Province of Mozambique, just south of the Cahora Bassa reservoir. The purpose of building this house was to give us a more comfortable place to stay when we are the village.

This is what it looks like from the air.

While our home in the village is pretty primitive by American standards it is comfortable and an enjoyable place to live. We enjoy being in the village and learning about the local language and culture. The house has a flush toilet (very important!) and a real kitchen with double sink and counters. We’re hoping to get a fridge one of these days but for now we just use mostly fresh food that doesn’t need refrigeration. In comparison to our neighbors’ houses, our house is a palace! But we have very good relations with the people in Dinthi. We have been visiting here since 2000.
