Flying turkeys and smiling graduates

Maggie Jo Shrum and Ellie hold up one of our Thanksgiving turkeys.

Our Thanksgiving this year was a day late but twice as fun. Our friends and long-time colleagues Jeff and Peg Shrum together with their daughter Maggie Jo came to visit us and share the American holiday. Jeff and I had been in South Africa two weeks earlier and we picked out two turkeys and flew them back to Mozambique in our luggage. These turkeys were well-traveled. They were originally from Brazil!

This month was exciting because one of our new Bible translators graduated. João Sulude will be going back home to Quelimane to begin a translation of the Bible into Chuwabu. I’m happy that I’ll get to have a small role in supervising his work during the first year when he and others will be producing Gospel recordings and a translation of the book of Mark. To João’s left is Ilidio, a Nyungwe student who will return to Hefsiba for his third year. And directly to my left is Alberto, a Sena speaker who will be going to Beira this year to work on recording the New Testament.

Back in October we were able to spend five days in Dinthi. It was a very successful visit with opportunities to renew friendships. I used my time in the village to video and record various types of music including Nyau dancing as seen in the photo above. [find out more]

Hilary and the kids finished a successful school year in November. Grades were good and now everyone is looking forward to a month off. In addition to the activities above I was busy with quite a lot of interesting Internet projects [click here to see them]. I also traveled to South Africa for a week of meetings with our mission as well as TransWorld and FEBA Radio. And in November, I wrote a memoir of our life overseas since 1997 [read it here]. Now December is upon us, in one week Hilary and I celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary. In two weeks, Hilary’s mom, Ann, arrives and two weeks after that it’s Christmas. We will be celebrating this year with Germans, Canadians, South Africans and Mozambicans. But of course we’ll be missing our friends and family on the other side of the planet!

Prayer requests:

  • David is having trouble with his hearing aids.
  • David needs wisdom to manage many projects.
  • Spiritual vitality for the whole family.
  • Distribution of audio Scripture among the Nyungwe people.

Thanks as always for your prayers and support of our ministry in Mozambique.

Yours in Christ,

David (for Hilary and the Ker Kids)
