I suppose that's not my view of inspiration. That sounds like a lot of explaining things away that we don't like. I like you though.

Jeff, this is actually such a controversial point. Depending on your view of inspiration, God's desire for vengeance can be interpreted as human projections onto the deity. God transparently allowed the Bible to contain human perspectives on his ways. He was the general editor but he gave his writers a lot of leeway. Jesus' redefinition of sin shows me that God is more flexible about sin than the Old Testament would have it appear. He didn't just suddenly lose his preference for burnt offerings and clean camps when Jesus came.

Isn't most of the vengeance God's? And much of David's writing in the Psalms is echoing what God wants to happen? And doesn't this show how much God absolutely cannot stand sin? Isn't this part of the gospel? Just some quick thinking on it.

I'll fix that ASAP. I look forward to checking out your post. Hebrews certainly does depend on the Psalms and the author has a very eclectic method to choosing verses.

David - two notes. Your link to my blog in the body of your post doesn't work. Oh me, oh my - such frustrated clickers!

Second - thanks for the stimulus. I finally got around to looking at the NT again based on my original question in 2006 about Hebrews. I sorted all the verses from the psalms in Hebrews and it appears to me that the author used the psalms as the backbone of the letter. Not all the psalms used are completely politically correct. Post is on my Psalms blog here.

44 comments in, I'm late to the party, but I don't think anyone has responded to David's use of Luke 4:18-19 as an illustration. My thoughts are here: http://gervatoshav.blogspot.com/2010/03/god-of-vengeance-in-lukes-gospel.html

I like the New English Bible's section headings—they only occur every few chapters. The book of James, for example, has 11 section headings in the NIV, but only 1 in the NEB. I also love the verse-in-the-margin idea. It doesn't distract when you're reading, but it's even easier than every-verse-on-a-new-paragraph for finding a specific verse.

On the other hand, I can get used to the headings. It's always nice to have both options available.

It's too bad that The Books of the Bible—a TNIV edition without verse numbers, chapter numbers, section headings or footnotes (the translator notes are at the end of each book)—is no longer available. I hope Zondervan does something similar with the NIV 2011.

I could agree to that in general terms. I've endured so much bad preaching of the OT in Africa and the US... But a good God of Wrath sermon once in a while might be OK.

So we could agree on the Gospel as the correct tool for evangelism, and OT as the stuff that Christians need to hear every once in a while before their impression of God becomes too cuddly.
